  • Ep.3: The 1960s and 70s in the exhibition “CHRONORAMA. Photographic Treasures of the 20th Century”, at Palazzo Grassi
Susan Sontag is not only the author of one of the most important essays about photography, but also the protagonist, together with her son, of an eloquent and wonderful portrait. The third and final tale of Chronorama starts from here, and then recounts the 1960s and 70s through the portraits of Federico Fellini and his wife Giulietta Masina, of a young Arnold Schwarzenegger, and of lesser known figures such as the fifteen-year-old actor Björn Andrésen. The last photo mentioned in Chronorama is by Irving Penn, dedicated to an apparently dull subject: two old and worn cigarette butts.

  • Ep.2: The 1940s and 50s in the exhibition “CHRONORAMA. Photographic Treasures of the 20th Century”, at Palazzo Grassi
Have you ever heard of “humanist photography”? Have they ever told you about a picture taken in Cuzco around Christmas in 1948? The second tale of Chronorama is the story of the 1940s and 50s through the images belonging to the Condé Nast archives, ranging from a picture taken by Robert Doisneau in Paris during the war, to the sophisticated style of the 1950s, to the innovative and disruptive figure of the photographer Diane Arbus.

Su Chronorama. Istantanee dal Novecento

English and French available below. The 20th century was a time of wars and misery, but also of great prosperity and beauty. Magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair were the places where photography tried to show how times were changing and how styles were evolving from one decade to another. “Chronorama. Snapshots from the 20th century” is a three-part audio story that takes us inside the exhibition: “Chronorama. Photographic treasures from the 20th century.” Opening on 12 March at Palazzo Grassi, Venice. The exhibition consists of over 400 photos from the Condé Nast archive, some of which were recently acquired by the Pinault Collection. The narration invites the listener to focus on some of these images and portraits: Jean Cocteau; David Niven; Susan Sontag; Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina; the Beatles; Arnold Schwarzenegger; as well as less celebrated figures such as Dr. Mary Walker and Björn Andrésen. Through the gaze of great photographers such as Irving Penn and Cecil Beaton, Helmut Newton and Robert Doisneau, the 20th century is once again before our eyes. “Chronorama. Snapshots from the 20th century” is not an invitation to nostalgia and regret, but to observe with attention, curiosity and affection an era that is now behind us.
